Tatcha Pure One-Step Camellia Cleansing Oil Review

9 Aug

Tatcha Pure One-Step Camellia Cleansing Oil is a gentle, two-in-one makeup remover and cleanser. This beautiful blend of botanical oils is formulated to thoroughly cleanses the skin without stripping it of its natural moisture, an essential first step for any skincare ritual. The product is formulated without mineral oil to remove even water-resistant sunscreen, long-wear makeup formulas, and BB creams, it emulsifies completely and leaves no oily residue. It is rich in oleic and linoleic acids, along with vitamins A, B, and E to nourish dry skin, calm sensitive skin and decongest oily skin. Tatcha Pure is free of  parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.

0.8 OZ Tatcha Camellia Oil

I received a free small sample of Tatcha Camellia Oil as part of my Sephora sample choices with a recent purchase from their site. I have to admit I’ve always been a bit skeptical of washing my face with oil cleansers, so I was really eager to put this product to the test.

How to use:
With dry hands and a dry face gently massage the oil onto your face. One to two pumps is all you will need. Rinse with water, I prefer warm water, and the oil turns milky/silky and washes off all your grime or makeup residue. It melts away the day.

The Gamut of Experiments and Tests:

How well can it remove Makeup?
The first test was to see how well it would fair at dissolving and removing a normal day of make-up. Other brands have not stacked up as well and would leave me grabbing a makeup remover cloth or having to wash my face again, which is obviously quite annoying. This was not the case at all with the Tatcha oil. I am pleased to say that the Camellia oil passed this test with flying colors. I didn’t have to worry about spending extra time to clean my face, it knocks the competition out of the park and does an amazing job without leaving any residue.

5.1 OZ Tatcha Camellia Oil

Will Dry Skin be an issue?
The second test was for dry skin. Normally at night I have to use a moisturizer/night cream on my face to help combat skin dryness. That night I decided to skip the cream. The next morning after my daily cleansing and toning routine, when I looked in the mirror I was amazed at how great my skin looked. I couldn’t believe it, my skin wasn’t flaky or dry like it normally is, even without the use of a night cream the previous evening. Another bonus point for tatcha camellia oil. Being able to save money and time by skipping that nightly ritual of moisturizing cream was a wonderful and unexpected surprise.

Will I have any skin reactions?
The third test was how would my skin react to the product. I have very sensitive skin as well as acne. I am pleased to say that neither were an issue while using this cleansing oil. I didn’t have any acne flare ups, rashes, or allergic reactions which are always a worry for me when trying new products.

How will it smell?
The fourth test was regarding the scent. Most products I find have sickly scents that I can’t stand, but luckily this was not the case with the Tatcha Pure One Step Oil. Their isn’t an overwhelming scent, it’s light, clean and pretty much non-existent which is really a plus here.

Lasting Impressions:
I have had nothing but a positive experience with this cleansing oil. I am thrilled with the product, and the meaningful gifts associated with our purchases. Each purchase helps empower girls by sending them to school through their “Beautiful Faces, Beautiful Futures partnership.” When washed off  the oil emulsifies into a milk and melts off any makeup and daily grime residue you may have. Even waterproof makeup! I was astonished as I’ve tried other cleansing oils in the past, and they failed on so many levels. Using an oil instead of a foam or a gel soap seems a bit foreign to me and took getting used to, however that is not a bad thing. Any hesistanchesitancies I may have had due to past bad experiences have been eradicated and my faith in cleansing oil has been restored. This product is non-sensitizing, non-irritating, dermatologist-tested, and cruelty-free.

Overall Thoughts:
-Effective: No need for other makeup removers to step in to do the job.
-Time and Money Saver: No need for me to spend extra of either for moisturizer.
-Noticeably Soft and balanced skin even after one use.
-Giving Back: Purchase of the product empowers girls

Additional Product Info:
“Camellia Oil has been one of the geisha’s most treasured secrets for centuries, used to remove their iconic performance makeup without drying or damaging the skin. I am honored to bring new life to this ritual with our Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil, and even more delighted to tell you that your purchase of a Tatcha skincare item will send an incredible girl to school for day through our Beautiful Faces, Beautiful Futures partnership.”—Victoria Tsai, Founder

Final Thoughts:
I am very pleased.  I will definitely be making a full size purchase!!

Excellent quality
Safe and gentle for even the most sensitive skin
Removes waterproof makeup
Negates the need for extra moisturizes or creams

A bit spendy however a little goes a long way, and the product is well worth the purchase.

Formula X System NailPolish Review

10 Jan

Formula X is exclusive to Sephora.

Over the winter 2014 holidays I spent some of those VIP Insider beauty points we all covet on a mini trial sample of this Formula X revolutionary nail polish system. The kit included the mini-sized bottles of the system. The color that came with the kit was Cocoa Bisque.

For those unfamiliar, the systems four steps are as follows:

  • Step One: Cleanse
  • Step Two: Prime
  • Step Three: Color
  • Step Four: Shine

“Prep, Perfect, Shine”.

In more detail the steps:
The Nail Cleanser is reminiscent of an acetone / nail polish remover. Its quite effective, meaning if you spill a few drops on an already completed nail well you’ll have to re-do that nail. Its an “essential step that frees nails of residue and oil, optimizing base coat and lacquer adherence”.

The Base Coat is a tacky primer for better color adhesion / bonding. Its “An advanced adhesive primer containing essential bonding agents that form a sticky layer to fuse with your lacquer”.

Nail Color Of Your Choice from the line– Choose from over 200 Formula X shades and effects;

The Top Coat – glossy shiny topcoat. Really gives your manacure/pedicure that professional look. “A super glossy, state-of-the-art, long-wearing final step that enhances your lacquer’s shine and performance”.

Overall Thoughts:
Each step in the process was easy peasy, and dried in record time. I was amazed at how quickly everything set and dried! I finally ended up with a home manicure that was not smudged, and had that great shine we all desire. I couldn’t believe the results. It looked like a more professional manicure/pedicure. In step 3, the nail polish colors went on opaque, so I only needed one coat of the polish, where as with other polishes I need two. This turned into fastest self manicure ever for me, even with all 4 steps!!

2015-01-10 17.39.46

I wanted to give this kit a run for the money and really put it to the test. For the 1.5 weeks I left it on I did housework, cleaning, scrubbing, mini home construction projects by way of hammer and nails, computer work, lots of hand washing, exercising, yoga, furniture building, shipping/receiving, dishes, multiple showers, and cooking. I expected with all this that with in the first few 3 days I would have some sorry looking nails but guess what….NO Chips!!! Amazing right?! The color endures, I didn’t get my first small [hardly noticeable] chip until day 6 days in. some of the shiny top coat by that point started looking dull due to normal wear and tear if you will. And I was not wearing gloves for any of this work.

I currently reside in a cold winter climate, my hands are taking a beating but hey my nail polish sure lasted well! By 1.5 weeks my nails needed a trim and the top coat was looking a little dull in some spots. Some of the nail polish was cracked by this point, and there were a few chips. Off it came for experiment #2.

As an experiment, I decided to try the system with with my own non-formula x color, as I have many bottles to use up and would hate to just toss them for the new and shiny. I hate to waste things. The non-formula x brand I used was a bottle of “for the twill of it” by Essie. The manicure came out nearly as good as the formula x polish. I had to add an extra coat of polish since the color is not as opaque as formula x. I had to let my nails dry a wee bit however not nearly as long as I would have sans formula x system. They still dried very fast. I’m glad I can utilize the system to help use up these already owned polishes so that I can start purchasing Formula X its-self.

2015-01-10 17.39.13

Additional Product Info:
Formula X does offer other products to compliment the system. There is a hydrator, strengthener, cuticle cream, cuticle oil, appliques, press-pods, quench-to-go, nail polish remover, nail drying drops, nail drying spray, hand cream, etc…

The line offers over 200 colors, so plenty of options to choose from. Of the numerous colors, there is a wide array of collections to choose from. To name a few:

  • Translucents
  • Brillants
  • Shifters
  • Xplosives
  • SuperWatts
  • Sparklers
  • New Clasics
  • New Neutrals
  • Lusters
  • Transformers
  • Chromes
  • Electrics
  • Sea glass
  • Liquid Crystals
  • Brushed Metalics
  • Ombre Glitters

Final Thoughts:
I am very pleased with this system. My nails felt stronger, the flexibility of so many shades, I will definitely buy again!! Color me impressed. I can’t recommend this enough. Great buy! Try it!! High Endurance Color.

Excellent quality
Long lasting
Cheaper than a mani/pedi
Dries lightening fast
Strengthened nails
Worked even with non formula x polish

Nail polish bottles are pricier than your standard nail enamel.

The full size system runs for $32 US dollars.

Jamberry Review

29 Dec

A friend of mine was having one of those Jamberry parties virtually via Facebook. I thought hey why not give it a go and see what the fuss is all about! I went into this with zero expectations, as I had basically just learned of these at the time the party was being held. For those new to the concept, they are basically vinyl nail wraps that adhere to your nails by heat. They are an alternative to nail polish, or standard manicures/pedicures.

Jamberry Nail Wrap in – CARMEN OMBRE

It was fun to be able to attend a virtual party, there were games, prizes, pics and lots of interaction from the host, the attendees and the Jamberry consultant. Having a jamberry party is similar to a party lights, scentsy, etc… where in the host is eligible for gifts and discounts with some contingencies. I believe they get a gift out of the gate, and additional ones based upon how many sales there were from the party being held, as well as additional ones if others book parties with the consultant from this party.

Overall Thoughts:

I was shipped a Jamberry aka Jams sample to try. The sample contained only one wrap-pre cut, and it basically was meant for my pinky finger [well sorta it wasn’t an exact size match, so the sides weren’t all covered and started lifting up].  There’s some prep work involved, before application of the wraps.

Jamberry Wrap Sheet – in FIRST FROST

You want to clean your nails of any old polish, trim your nails, file them.  The consultant gave some tips and said you can buff the tops of your nails a bit to make the surface a wee bit rough, wash your hands, then use an alcohol wipe to clean the nail bed surface of any residual oils that would prevent the wrap from adhering well. There are plenty of youtube videos out there with demonstrations which was quite helpful. You can use either the jamberry heater or a hair dryer to apply the nail wrap. In my case I was using my hair dryer.

Jamberry Mini Heater

There are many methods for application and removal. There are the official standard methods, and then many of the extra tips and tricks to add in. Plenty of How-To videos on youtube. I certainly did not feel at a loss for guidance :). I ordered a full sheet, I figured hey benefit of the doubt. Maybe an actual set will work out fine and it was just since the sample wasn’t an exact size match was why it was lifting. Wrong! It took such a long time to attempt best fitting sizes cut to try a match up for my nailbeds. I felt like the amount of time I spent on this was longer than it would take to just paint my nails. No time savings here ladies. I also kept running into the issue of rough spots and having to keep nail files with me or nail trimmers to correct the rough spots.

Carmen Ombre Jamberry

  • They last longer than a standard manicure does for me, [unless I get a gel manicure].
  • Lots of designs and themes to choose from, 200+. Solids, Ombre, Prints, many finishes, even sports team designs!
  • You can even design your own wraps, from their nail art studio!
  • Enough wraps on the sheet for multiple manicures/pedicures.
  • Versatility, you can have accent nails, and the rest be polished, you can put polish underneath some of clear lacey ones, or just go for a full set of one color/pattern.
  • Junior nail sets for children.

  • The ill-fitting sample made it a little hard to gauge how well these would stay on.
  • A bit difficult to put on.
  • Don’t exactly fit my nails well even after purchasing a full set.
  • Nailbed health was diminished after removal of the wrap.
  • The amount of time spent on application was more than me painting my nails.

Final Thoughts:

One of the biggest complaints I had was that the sides would lift up and become stuck in my long hair when I would brush/wash/style my hair. My nails are quite curved and not flat. Other online reviews with similar nail types concurred. After I removed the wrap my nails were brittle, thin, and felt weird and painful. I would not purchase these again. I thought on screen the wraps looked great, once I received them I thought some of them looked a bit cheap and not like a real manicure.

Additional Product Info:

Jamberry Nails was created by three sisters after an expensive afternoon at the nail salon. After their outing they vowed to find a simpler, more cost effective way to keep their hands looking polished and thus Jamberry was born.

$15.00-17$ USD for standard wrap sheets

$18.75 USD Jamberry Nail Art Studio [upload your own images and design custom nail wraps]

The site additionally offers nail care items which start at $10.00 USD

KGD Koh Gen Do 100% Pure Cotton Pads Review

21 Feb

KGD Koh Gen Do is a box of natural soft touch cotton pads. That’s right no chemical fertilizer or pesticides were used in processing. This cotton has not been chemically treated or bleached so these medical grade cotton pads will have some natural pigmentation to them, which is completely normal. The pads are very light, soft and fluffy. At $12 a box, 60 come to a box however since they are a large size you could easily cut in half to stretch your dollar even further.

The pads work well and really absorb anything you use them with. I tested with toner and in fact since they absorbed so much I felt like I was using more toner than I normally would, thus causing my toner to run out faster. When you buy pricey products you want them to last as long as possible. I did notice that after while using the cotton pad it tends to roll up a little. The latter not being a deal break in my eyes.

One of the nice things about this natural cotton pad is that if you have highly sensitive skin such as myself, you can rest assured that this cotton will not make you itch or have a reaction.

Prior to testing this product I had not heard of the Koh Gen Do product line, so I was anxious to read more about their product line and I am left with a curiosity to try their other products.

Boscia Detoxifying Black Cleanser Review

14 Feb

I was curious about all these popular “black”cleansers I had been hearing about so I figured why not try one?

I picked up the Boscia Detoxifying Black Cleanser. This cleanser is a silky smooth gel that warms on contact with skin to open up your pores, however in order for the cleanser to “warm” I had to ensure my face was already wet. The warmth does not last very long, so you have to quickly massage into your face.

One of the nice things about this product is after I washed my face I found I didn’t have that dry tight feeling, like I just stepped in from a bitter cold winter day. The cleanser did a pretty thorough job of removing make-up, and stripping off that unwanted dirt and grime.

This black cleanser had a scent that was reminiscent of plants. Not completely awful, however something I could have done with out. I didn’t feel like this product made such a strong difference in my skin that it would be worth purchasing again, especially since I kept breaking out.

At 28 dollars a bottle its a wee bit pricey, so you won’t find it at your local convenience store, it can be found at boutiques and online retailers.

Murad Clean Scene Begging for Balance Moisturizer Review

31 Dec
Murad Clean Scene by reacurry
Murad Clean Scene, a photo by reacurry on Flickr.

Murad has a new vibrantly packaged skin care line on the market.  The clean scene line wants  to alleviate you from a complicated routine and achieve a healthy glow about your skin. The Clean Scene Lins is comprised of:

  • Cleanser
  •  Oil free moisturizer
  •  SPF 15 moisturizer
  •  Spot treatment
  •  Facial scrub

The packaging look and tag lines sound like they came from a teenager, which is who this line is geared towards.  Ironically enough I didn’t know that when I picked up this product. I only tested the oil free moisturizer for this review.  Despite the smell the product is excellent. My sensitive skin did not break out, and the moisturizer did not make my skin appear greasy like most skin care lines out there tend to do.  Oil was controlled and mattified. I wasn’t expected this moisturizer to actually make my face appear less oily, even with out a daily dose of cosmetics.

The moisturizer was quite fragrant, a bit cloying even. The main ingredient in this line is yumberry, a Chinese antioxidant. This product can be used on the face, neck and chest.

Aloe & Green Tea Oil Free Moisturizer Review

18 Dec
alba moisturizer by reacurry
alba moisturizer, a photo by reacurry on Flickr.

Alba Moisturizer is a natural Hawaiian Oil Free Moisturizer for the face and neck. The directions on the packaging state “Apply daily to clean face and neck. Wears well under make-up. Perfect for all skin types. Avoid eyes.”

The lotion consistency is light and subtle with a scent that it not offending or overwhelming. The lotion goes on smoothly but to me felt oily, greasy, and did not absorb well. I noticeably felt it on my skin comparable to a heavy lotion. With or with out make up my face would stay greasy the entire day, I had to use oil blotting sheets to reduce shine and control the oil. While the lotion states it is for all skin types, I found that I kept breaking out any time I used it. Whether I used a very small amount of lotion or a bit more for dry skin it didn’t make a difference, I still experienced a break out and had quite a greasy complexion from this.

This brand can easily be found in most retail chains or grocery stores, and is not a high end department store item. The price runs anyhere from 15-20$ dollars a container depending on where you purchase this.

I would not recommend nor would I purchase again. I hate the idea of wasting products, so I even tried using this on my body but the moisturizer just never seems to fully absorb anywhere I applied.

BareMinerals Purely Nourishing Moisturizer Review

19 Nov

BareMinerals Purely Nourishing Moisturizer is a hydrating moisturizer using the active soil complex we have come to associate with the BareMinerals /  Bare Escentuals line of products. This moisturizer felt heavy on my skin and not lightweight as I had hoped. I can’t say that I noticed any improved firmness or radiance even after using the entire container of this sample. My skin was definitely hydrated but at the cost of using something that made my face look so greasy, I wouldn’t say this product was right for me. In terms of hydration I can’t say I felt like the hydration stuck with me, meaning as soon as I washed my face it was very dry again, where as with other moisturizers I have tested this was not the case. being a fan of the BareMinerals make up line, I had high hopes for their skincare line. So far the two skincare line products I have tested came up short and did not meet my expectations.

In all fairness, to give this product a chance, I decided to stick with the moisturizer until the sample ran out. I think is more than a fair test in my book. Some products are so terrible by either making me break out for example that I can not do this with all. This moisturizer wasn’t horrible, but it was not the best either. It was quite simply put mediocre at its best and too heavy and greasy.

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser Review

6 Nov
Fresh soy face cleanser by reacurry
Fresh soy face cleanser, a photo by reacurry on Flickr.

Fresh Brand Soy Face Cleanser was certainly without a doubt a treat for my skin to sample. The mild formula was gentle on my sensitive skin, and I could even use around my eyes. This is probably by far one of the most soothing face cleansers I have had the opportunity to test. I was pleasantly surprised that this cleanser was able to remove my make up without a hitch, even my mascara.

I found that I did not experience any over drying and was able to use this face wash in the morning, after the gym, and then before bedtime. There were not any overpowering scents or perfumes to set my allergies off or make my skin break out, just a nice natural clean fresh scent. The cleanser was light and not oily, it was a luxurious feeling. The cleanser is a unique gentle crème gel making it ideal for all skin types. A little pricey at $38.00 but the oh so worth it! I look forward to putting this in my “keep” bin and integrating it into my daily routine when I am not testing other products.
