Dr. Scholl’s Massaging Gel Insoles

7 Jul

Revive Your Old or Uncomfortable Shoes with Dr. Scholl’s Massaging Gel Insoles. Adding comfort and shock absorption to your shoe and easy on the wallet.

dr-scholls

With it being summer, its been flip flop season. Summer is a short season where I’m at, so putting on closed toed shoes to test these out at this time of year was certainly a challenge in itself.

Now I’ve used Dr. Scholls Massaging Insoles, and other Dr Scholls products in the past. So I am no stranger to the brand and the product. In the past I have used these in boots, or sneakers, so I thought hey why not try them in a pair of mules that normally hurt my feet.

DSC_0002

Overall thoughts:

The Install:
I had to trim the insole down just a bit to match my shoe size. This was to be expected, and not a product of manufacturer fault by any means. They send the insoles with the option to customize it to your shoe /  foot size. It took a little bit of shimmying to get it in place to fit just so. Again to be expected with any type of similar product.

DSC_0001_1

The Price:
I have seen these at drug stores such as CVS or Target for $9-$10 USD.

Pros:
The insole made the sole of my foot more comfortable and I didn’t experience any pain there like I normally would.

Cons:
The inside of  my shoe did not have as much room for my foot, so it was a bit of a tight fit. So while the underside of my foot/instep/sole did not have any pain, regrettably by the end of the day I had blisters on my toes.

I tested with a pair of ballet slippers style shoes, but immediately had to take them out due to lack of space for my foot in the shoe. Additionally  they made the shoe become really wide as if a wide / thick foot was in place. Once I took the insole out the shoe returned to normal and I could fit my foot inside. I was disappointed I would not be able to use these in the ballet slipper since I can’t walk any great distances due to foot pain and them rubbing on my toes. Perhaps there is another product out there for these instances.

DSC_0001

Final Thoughts:
I would use these in other shoes such as sneakers or boots, but apparently they are just not a good fit for mules or ballet slippers.  I have had excellent results in boots. The insoles in those have lasted me for years. They have held up under hours of walking through amusement parks and the stress of dancing the night away.

Rating:

4

I gave the Massaging Gel Insoles a 4, because its a quality product, just not perfect for all shoe types.

List of Make Up and Product Sampling Programs

30 Mar

Since its fun to try new things, and because I like to be organized, I wanted to assemble a list of  Make-Up & Product Sampling services that I could easily reference from one location. I decided to post and share my findings along with some notes. In my research I found that others had been looking for the same type of information. I found some of this info in magazines around my flat, and others were from on-line beauty message boards. I removed a few sites who didn’t seem to be around any longer. If you know of any new ones to add to this list, please comment.

You also get 50 points if you get people to sign up via referral link and they become a subscriber or place an order with Birchbox.
  • Cravebox ($10 monthly) You get 4 to 5 samples ranging in size from full, deluxe and sample size products.
  • GoGoGirlfriend ($12.95 monthly for a box each month OR $6.99 monthly and you’ll get a box every other month)
There are two options for GGG – either pay $12.95 and get a box monthly (12 boxes per year) or pay $6.99 monthly and get a box every two months (6 boxes per year). Items in the box vary from ELF Cosmetics to indy companies.
  • Goodebox For Eco-conscious Beauty Trial Size Samples, $16 USD per month.

  • New Beauty’s Test Tube ($29.95 + $8.95 shipping, quarterly [every three months])
This subscription service not only sends out deluxe size samples but also full size products. Unlike many other subscription companies this one is sent out once per quarter. 1st Quarter: Jan, Feb, Mar; 2nd Quarter: Apr, May, Jun; 3rd Quarter: Jul, Aug, Sep; 4th Quarter Oct, Nov, Dec.
  • New Beauty’s Test Tube at QVC (auto renewal or one time only). $29.96 + $6.97 shipping/handling (+ tax if your state has tax)
Exactly like New Beauty except this is a QVC version filled with products sold on QVC. Also sold on a quarterly basis. If the links do not work it means they pulled the page due to the product selling out and will not have the page back up until near the start of the next quarter.
  • Sample Society Caters to on-the-go professionals who want only the best of beauty

For Men:

  • His Black Box ($12 monthly)
For men… or women who like men’s products. Set up a profile and get four to five deluxe size samples designed for men.
  • Birchbox Man This may actually NOT be a subscription service for men but rather the limited edition box.
  • Male Box INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE

In Canada:

In the UK:

  • GlossyBox (£10 monthly + £2.95 shipping/handling)
  • Amarya Beauty Box (£10 monthly or £120 yearly.) If you subscribe to the yearly plan the entire £120 will be billed to your bank or credit card. Like Birchbox, you’re awarded points and in Amarya’s case you’re awarded 120 points if you pay for a year in advance PLUS you get a Santaverde Gift set work £56.
  • Boudoir Prive (£10 monthly) Also similar to other beauty box subscription services you get between 5 to 6 samples each month and earn loyalty points.
  • Carmine (£10 per month + pp* or £110 yearly)
Receive 5 exclusive beauty products selected by their expert. Postage and packaging is an additional £2.75 per box.
  • Feel Unique Beauty Box (£9.95 monthly) According to their site they “send your unique Beauty Box during the first week of every month, filled with 5 deluxe-sized beauty products, plus a bonus beauty sample for extra unique-measure!”
  • Latest In Beauty (starts at £1 monthly) Now this one is definitely different as they offer three different types of boxes starting at £1 monthly.
    1. The beauty box for only £1 box includes only three samples.
    2. The luxury box you get to choose your products. Price? Unknown.
    3. The themed boxes are offered only six times a year and I believe this box is £4.95.

“What is the difference between the Monthly Beauty Box and Luxury Samples? This is the answer given in the FAQs, “The Monthly Beauty Box contains small samples (usually sachets or small vials) so you can test out a product a couple of times to get a feel for it. These are provided free of charge – we only ask that you pay a small contribution towards postage and packing. The luxury samples are much larger – similar to travel size products – and allow you to try products for longer. Because they’re bigger and more expensive to send, we have to charge a little more for them.” It’s kind of odd how payment is made as it’s done via text-messaging. Anyone have a Latest In Beauty subscription?

In Australia:

  • Lust Have It (AU $14.95 monthly or $160 for 12 months) – Launched October 2011
This is the most similar to Birchbox right down to awarding of points to redeem for $10 off a purchase. Delivery is for Australia and Tasmania only. At time time I do not know if they ship to New Zealand or not.
  • BellaBox Australia (AU $45.00 every three months)
Get 4 to 5 samples monthly.

In France:

  • Joliebox (10€ monthly + 3€ shipping)
The site is in French and is for those in France. What you get are 4 to 5 miniature high-end cosmetics (“mini-products, formats and even travel large formats from time to time“) plus a magazine. There is a loyalty program but I’m not sure how theirs works.

Beside beauty subscription/sampling boxes there are other types of subscription and sampling services to choose from ranging from clothing to shoes to even children’s toys. The following include some of the well know subscription and sampling services out there. With the popularity of subscription services booming this list will continue to grow.

Clothes

  • Stylemint ($29.99 monthly)
The styling powerhouse known as the Olson twins are back! Stylemint is their latest venture where they will be designing and releaing a new t-shirt each month! (Credit to Melanie for the tip! :D)

Jewelry

Shoes

  • JustFab ($39.95 monthly)
Similar to Kim Kardashian’s Shoe Dazzle this one is by supermodel Kimora Lee Simmons. Shoe size 5½ to 11. First purchase is 50% off.
  • Shoe Mint
$79.98 monthly you can opt to skip if you don’t like a pair of shoes. Steve Madden, Rachel Bilson, and Nicole Chavez are the designers of the shoes. Opened November 2011.
  • Shoe Dazzle ($39.95 monthly, can skip before the 5th of each month.)
Owned by Kim Kardashian, this is was among the first of the product subscription services that I heard about. I’ve been a member since 2008 and while I haven’t purchased each month I have loved the shoes I’ve purchased from there including my exercise shoes which cost over $60 at other stores. In early 2011 they began to offer more than just shoes and handbags and now offer jewelry, haircare/cosmetic products (during the Dazzle Deal) among other items. From time to time they also have 2 pairs for $39.95.
  • Sole Society ($49.95 monthly, also can skip the month before the 5th of each month.)
Exactly like Shoe Dazzle in that it’s shoes but it’s $10 more. Styles are practically identical to Shoe Dazzle but sometimes they have some much more cute styles.
  • Shoe Privee ($39.95 monthly) You can earn “Rewards Points” to redeem for Shoe Privee credit. 1000 = 1 credit. Buy 1 pair of shoes at $39.95 and get 100 points (2.5 points earned per dollar spent). Earn 250 points when you referred someone and makes their first purchase.

Morning Star Farms: Grillers Vegan

24 Feb

Finally blizzard Nemo that dumped 2.5 feet of snow on us, let up and delivery trucks were able to make it to our surrounding areas again. Snowpocalpyse was causing the masses to stock pile foods and supplies and I was having such a hard time to locate these tasty tidbits. It was a bit frustrating as I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find them before my bzzagent review period ran out. There was much rejoicing in our house once we finally located the restocks freezer shelves of these tempting boxes.

Now before I give my review, I want you to understand that I haven’t always been a vegetarian. I grew up being a what I call a “meatatarian”. Everyone in my family eats meat, fish, poultry, etc.. So when I became a vegetarian at age 26, they were a bit surprised. I mention all this because I feel like it gives me an unbiased opinion, I have had real burgers or sausage Patties before. So I know what they taste like and can easily compare these vegetarian/vegan versions to real meat versions.

I brought home my boxes of Morning Star Farms: Grillers Vegan & Morning Star Farms: Original Sausage Patties.

My initial thoughts:

“How can fake meat be so damn tasty?! I mean seriously!”.

DSC_0008

Morning Star Farms: Grillers Vegan

I was feeling hungry, and it was nearly time for lunch. It was Sunday, and today was a day of rest and relaxation. I decided to stick along with that theme and make brunch for us. I like to be different, unique and creative. I like to put a different spin or rather my own spin on things sometimes and go with the flow. I grabbed a bagel [since I was out of English muffins], toasted and added cream cheese. I poached some eggs and added a dash of pepper. Added some spinach leaves, and the morning star patty with melted cheese on top. I assembled all items and then added a spoonful of hollandaise sauce. The verdict = win!

DSC_0006

Morning Star Farms: Grillers Vegan – being used for a vegetarian spin on Eggs Benedict

One night when I came home from work I just wanted a quick meaty like snack if you will so I heated up a sausage patty and melted cheese on it. Great flavors, satisfying and let my taste buds fulfilled and my tummy satiated.

DSC_0003

Morning Star Farms: Original Sausage Patties

On another day a different spin I took with the sausage patties was to add in an egg scramble. Again no disappoint, only savory tasty win in my tummah! It doesn’t just have to be “Meatless Mondays” like the companies newest slogan says, it can be meatless every day’s!

Overall Thoughts:

A great option for those of us who are vegetarian, and tasty enough for those who aren’t. This doesn’t taste bland or like the dreaded cardboard taste.

Pros:

  • Great taste.
  • Good source of protein [especially important if you are a vegetarian like Moi].
  • Large variety of items and flavors for each product.
  • Average price.
  • You can use the variety of products in many of your recipes are replacements for meat.

Cons:

Can be hard to find around times of snowstorms…hah but all joking aside no complainants about either product.

Final Thoughts:

Rating:

5

Redbox Instant by Verizon Beta Test Review

6 Jan

RedboxInstant

I was invited to take part in the Redbox Instant Beta Test Campaign for free. I was definitely excited for this one. I enjoy watching movies in the theater on the big screen,  however due to sold out shows or frigid temperatures in this region, I lack the motivation to bundle up in layers. I don’t always pre-purchase tickets to leave my house much earlier than show time  to “camp out” for a spot.  Its also annoying to drive 45-60 minutes to find out the show is sold out or the only seats left are in the neck-ache inducing front row. That being said its nice to have instant streaming movies as an option in this day and age. Yay for technology!

redbox

Verizon’s Instant Beta has begun rolling out to those of us who were lucky enough to be invited into the private beta. Once I received my code for the campaign, I dove in feet first. I am a pretty tech savvy person, and staying on top of technology and sciences well its just one of my many interests and passions if you will. I didn’t anticipate I would have much trouble to figure this site out, as say a non technical person would.

redbox-instant,T-K-365240-13

The selection of movies is not very great, it’s quite slim and disappointing.  I have a much larger selection with my Netflix account. Of the selection they do offer, most were older movies or cheesy ones I would not want to watch. The genre’s and subgenre’s were limited,  not as vast as the options with Netflix. Additionally some of the categories I was interested in such as Bollywood movies, were not available at all in the foreign section or musical section.

redbox-instant-scoop-feature-art

I thought okay most American’s won’t watch Bollywood so let me try another favorite of mine, sci-fi, yet that ended up being the genre that had the aforementioned high cheese factor. The movies shown on their site were one’s I can picture the Mystery Science Theater 3000 [MST3k] crew getting their hands on, if they have not all ready.  I’m not sure if any of those cheesy one’s were even available to watch as I was feeling frustrated trying to find available videos on streaming so I gave up.

photo 4

Cheesy Sci-Fi Movie Choices

Interface wasn’t too hard to figure out but again not as simple as Netflix’s account. I was trying to figure out how to save movies to a queue the way I do on Netflix, I saw a few icons so I started clicking on things and eventually figured out that the ticket stub icon was how you bookmark them to find easier and remind your self that you wanted to watch the movie or rent it. I wished there had been perhaps a tutorial or legend of icons.

when i click on myredbox

One of many errors I encountered

I kept encountering error messages and would see duplicated movie posters in the selections right next to each other. Almost as if someone didn’t QA or spot check things before go live.

Fotor0106121856

Duplicated movie posters example 1

On the iPad app, only 1 of the 19 movies I selected / and bookmarked would play, the 18 the only available option was a preview. It wasn’t until I was at the computer that I found out these were only available at the kiosk only. The iPad app wasn’t as easy to log into as one would think. I thought that since I had set up an account I could just log in with my email address, however I ended up having to dig through my email, to find out I had to go to the campaign page to find that code for this beta test in order to log into the app. I couldn’t get the code to copy paste correctly so I had to keep switching apps until I finally had the code input directly.

redbox1

Duplicated movie posters example 2

I found the iPad app to pretty much be a waste of time since the limited selection of movies I was remotely interested in trying only had the preview available, especially since the app wouldn’t even display these were available at the store kiosk. I didn’t see a way to separate out kiosk only movies vs. subscription only movies.

redbox6

Yet even more site issues. Can say I wasn’t surprised at this point.

If your someone who likes to read reviews, then take note that not  many user’s have written reviews of movies in the way you can find on Netflix. I believe that must be since it’s still such a new service but one can not be sure. Users do that the ability to rate the movies on the site, the same as with Netflix.

Redbox-Instant

Sure this streaming service is cheaper at $8 encompassing 4 movies and unlimited streaming compared to my Netflix where I have unlimited movies mailed to me for $15.99 and unlimited streaming for $7.99 for a total of  23.98. It may be a bit pricier but to me worth it. I don’t have to leave my house to get the physical DVDs as I would with RedBox. The redbox kiosk’s aren’t at all stores, and I seldom go to places that have the kiosk so for me personally that would be a hassle.

Redbox-Instant-signup-page

Searching for movies on either format was also problematic. I would see a movie I wanted to find out more about. Instead of immediately clicking on the movie, I scrolled around some more and decided later to search out that movie in my mind. When I searched for movies by their exact name the results were either nothing at all, or not only be unable to find the correctly spelled movie title, but it would also show nothing but other non related items.

Fotor0106124923

Note these are two different screens. For this post I put the two screen shots together.

One movie I found available to rent was only available to stream on the computer and not the iPad. So on the computer I went, and when I tried to play the movie it would throw up error messages and never would play.

redbox7

Error message if I tried to watch a rented movie

The time available for me to watch a rented movie[had it worked] was not appealing either. I prefer Netflix in this round also. They don’t force time limits to their users, and you also don’t have to separately rent movies for added fees like I would with Redbox.

redbox2

Redbox Movie Availability Time Limits

If i tried a different browser I had to grab that code again in order to be let into the site instead of it just asking for my email which would have been a much better user experience. I had to go log into the bzzagent campaign to get the code again.

redboxinstant-invite

Time to enter the code yet again!

Movie would not play in chrome, Firefox, or IE. in trouble shooting the error message their site troubleshooting section said that it was a Silverlight issues. Well other sites that user Silverlight play things just fine. re-installing Silverlight and running the Microsoft Silverlight fix it tool also did not sort it.

redbox5

Duration of rented movie availability

I started to think, god I really hope this site did not charge my credit card for a movie that I can’t play! So I reached out to customer service at that point. I did hate having to put in my credit card info for a trial, after a month I was hoping it would just close out my account if I didn’t bother to start a subscription plan and enter in the credit card details. Instead I have set a calendar reminder for myself to cancel the service.

redbox-instant-logo-verizon

I guess rentals online are not free compared to online streaming and the included 4 kiosk rentals? Seems a bit confusing on the site. I did have to contact customer support who responded quickly. I choose the live chat option, and was able to get my money refunded since the rental movie would not play. After speaking with the quick responding tech support they were able to reverse the charged since the rented movie was not cooperating, and also a few hours later after their tier 2 support team investigated emailed to let me know that this video has a known bug and should have been removed from the catalog. They appreciated me letting them know and have since removed it from the catalog until the bug is resolved.

Redbox-Instant (2)

Just to see how the streaming goes for anything that would play I clicked on of the  random movie on the site, that no surprise I had never heard of. The site utilizes Microsoft Silverlight player to stream the movies. No complaints about that at least. Redbox streams the whole movie and it must temporarily cache  it to your drive, as there were no buffering issues at all when the movie played. Even if I paused it to grab a drink, or let it sit over night when I fell asleep. I am on high-speed broad band which is a requirement of this service. If nothing else, at least the video quality was comparable to the outstanding quality I receive from Netflix.

redbox-instant (1)

Overall Thoughts:

I  entered this campaign having no set thoughts or expectations and kept an open mind. It’s a good thing otherwise in this case I would have been sorely disappointed. I am glad I did not pay for this service as I would have asked for a refund and cancelled my account post haste. The streaming service is subpar, and while it does not need to go to the drawing board, it does need a bit more work to edge out the remainder of bugs and address all the above mentioned issues. The redbox characters in the adverts around the web are amusing. Since the service does not meet or exceed what I am looking for in online streaming service I will be sticking with Netflix who offer more content and options with no bugs.

Pros:

  • Outstanding customer service! They are polite, fast, efficient and prompt.
  • Rent and watch movies from the comfort of  home.

Cons:

  • Many bugs and errors still present on both the computer and with the iPad app.
  • Small selection of movies to choose from. Not all genre’s represented so not all audiences would be interested in the available content.
  • Most uploaded content is hokey and the movies are mainly ones users would not have an interest  in.

Final Thoughts:

This service still needs more testing so I would suggest they hold off on rolling this out for a few more quarters or even a full year. I would also suggest they ramp up and offer a larger selection of both tv shows and movies. A tutorial of features would also be nice.
